Collection: Fabulous Frigatebirds

Frigatebirds are so spectacular. With wingspans of 7 feet or more, they soar effortlessly on narrow wings, with pointed beaks and deeply forked tails creating a prehistoric-looking silhouette.

Their lifestyle is equally unusual. Despite being seabirds, they lack waterproof feathers and cannot land on the water. So, they often feed by chasing other seabirds and forcing them to drop or regurgitate their meals, instead of catching food themselves. Males are perhaps best known for their remarkable courtship displays, inflating a bright red gular pouch like a balloon.

This surprising and unique combination of characteristics have made frigatebirds some of my favourite birds in the world. However, they are often under-appreciated, and sometimes maligned for their piratic tendencies. I have spent considerable time photographing them in recent years, hoping to showcase their remarkable appearance and spectacular home environments in a unique light.
