Frigatebirds are perhaps best known for their remarkable courtship displays, where males inflate a large balloon-like bright red gular pouch in an effort to attract a mate. In order to witness this famous behaviour, one typically needs to visit a frigatebird breeding colony. Genovesa Island in the Galapagos is home to thousands of nesting Great Frigatebirds, and is one such place where this phenomenon can be observed. Utilizing a 100mm f/2.8 lens, I photographed this displaying male, composing him with a female in the background as the scene was softly backlit by the setting sun.
