When I think of frigatebirds, I think of two environments: the sky, and the ocean. They are incredibly unique birds. Frigatebirds eat seafood, but they don't usually catch it themselves, and they lack waterproof oils in their feathers, so they can't get wet. Instead, frigatebirds are kleptoparasitic, meaning they steal their food from other seabirds, usually in dramatic mid-air battles. They can often be seen circling over the ocean, looking for their next target. Wanting to photograph one from a unique perspective, I went for quite a few ocean swims in Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, where my main focus was capturing the birds that were flying above from a different perspective than normal. I captured this Magnificent Frigatebird from below while snorkeling off of Santa Cruz Island, using an underwater housing with the dome port partially submerged underwater. I used a small aperture of f/16 to capture detail in the water as well as the bird and sky above, and to get a little bit of a starburst effect on the sun rays.
