A bird known by many names, the Canada Jay is famous for its “friendliness” towards skiers and hikers, often seeking out people in hopes of receiving handouts. This bird was formerly known as the Gray Jay, but after being formally proposed as Canada’s national bird, ornithologists officially changed the name of Gray Jay to the Canada Jay. Many people know the bird by the name Whisky Jack, which is an anglicized version of Wisakedjak, a well-meaning trickster and hero in Cree, Algonquin and Menominee First Nation mythologies.
