Famous for changing their feathers to match their snowy surroundings in the winter, and their rocky surroundings in the summer, ptarmigan are some of my favourite birds. Their mastery of camouflage can make them very difficult to find! While exploring near Canada’s Kluane National Park, I came across a covey of Willow Ptarmigan moving through the snowy subalpine environment. Except for their black eye, beak, and tail feathers, their plumage perfectly matched their environment. I captured this high-key image as a group of them flew past in the whiteout conditions.
