On the night of May 10th 2024, we witnessed something I never thought I’d ever experience from my home city of Vancouver: the aurora borealis dancing in the sky all night long, from horizon to horizon! I’ve long dreamed of getting a photo of birds with the northern lights, so that’s where I focused my efforts. Making some plans as I waited for darkness to arrive, I ultimately had some success with photographing a few different bird species under the aurora, such as this pair of Canada Geese! This image is a 5-panel panorama shot at 14mm, to showcase the aurora from horizon to the zenith, straight up in the sky. While I’ve seen the northern lights on numerous occasions from the Vancouver area before, this display was incomparable, and was similar to the best northern lights displays I’ve seen up in the Yukon. It was well worth the all-nighter!
