There’s no feeling quite like being out under a dark, starry night sky, so far away from the city that the ground is being illuminated only by the light from space. The photons from the stars and galaxies that illuminate the ground have travelled hundreds, thousands, or even millions of light years to reach our eyes here on Earth. When the landscape is completely covered in snow, the ground reflects the light from space in a way that can sometimes make it difficult for the naked eye to discern where the sky ends and the ground begins. It makes you feel like you are suspended in a void, but it’s the most beautiful void imaginable. That was the feeling I had one night last March, I was treated to a spectacular clear sky in -20C (-4F) temperatures in the far northwestern corner of British Columbia. Wanting to capture the vastness of the milky way stretching across the sky, I captured a 22-panel panorama with a 14mm lens, at f/2 to allow lots of light into the camera to reveal hidden details in the sky. Each panorama panel for the sky is a stack of two 1-minute exposures, a technique used to increase detail and reduce noise. The panels for the foreground are single 1-minute exposures. To give a sense of the scale of the landscape, I asked my friend Ian to stand near the center of the composition, where he was aligned with the zodiacal light (a phenomena which causes the glow in the sky visible at the center of the image) shining over a rugged mountain peak. This is the final result!
