The Arctic Tern is my favourite bird species. While exploring in northwestern corner of British Columbia, I spent time hiking into some extremely remote areas. As I entered a valley, I spotted a small lake. Approaching the water, I was greeted by this beautiful tern. It protected its territory, hovering above me and chasing me away from where it likely had a nest hidden. I took some photos for a short period of time before moving away, leaving the tern to protect its territory in peace. I loved the angelic look of the tern in this pose, and the way it was complemented by the bright backdrop. With an annual journey of 90,000 kilometers, the Arctic Tern is the longest distance migrant in the animal kingdom. These birds fly round-trip between their Arctic nesting grounds and Antarctic non-breeding grounds every year. Over the course of its lifetime, that migration distance adds up to 2.4 million kilometers, equivalent to travelling to the moon and back over three times, or travelling the circumference of the Earth 60 times.
