Pictured here is a Great Gray Owl, photographed in flight as it hunted in a meadow in the interior of British Columbia, Canada. When the owl landed on the post seen in the background, I positioned myself so that sunset sky would be behind the owl. Anticipating that it would eventually make a hunting attempt, I was hopeful it would choose to do so before the colours in the sky faded. I was rewarded when the owl took flight, heading straight towards me, and plunged into the grass after a rodent. You don’t see these spectacular birds often, but every second you spend with one is like magic. Searching for Great Gray Owls in the vast boreal forest may be incredibly difficult, but it is also incredibly rewarding.
