A partial solar eclipse took place on the morning of March 29 2025, best viewed from northeastern Canada, where the moon covered around 90% of the sun. Even better, the maximum eclipse took place right at sunrise! I enjoyed the view and photographed this scene from Baie-Comeau, Quebec. Since fall of 2023, I’ve enjoyed combining my love of eclipses and birds, by photographing birds in front of eclipses. While I had my eye on this eclipse for quite a while, I left planning the precise details until just a few days before, due to fairly poor average weather conditions in the region at this time of year. In other words, I was going to go wherever the gaps in the clouds would be- if there would be a gap at all. Fortunately, various weather models began to reach consensus a few days before the eclipse that it would be clear on the north side of the St Lawrence River, where it widens into the Atlantic Ocean. After two days of intensive scouting, I finally settled on my chosen location, where I’d have the combination of an open view to the eastern horizon, good forecasted weather, and an abundance of birds. Returning for the sunrise eclipse, I photographed this beautiful scene, lining up an American Black Duck in the foreground!
