Each year hundreds of thousands of shorebirds migrate through the Fraser River Delta of British Columbia, heading north to the Arctic in early Spring, and southbound to Central and South America throughout Summer and Fall. Growing up, I would spend my summers while I was off school commuting to the mudflats by bike and public transit, spending countless hours getting to know the area and the birds which would migrate through. I captured this photo during a magical encounter, as a large flock of Western Sandpipers flew directly towards me. They passed just a few feet overhead, surrounding me in the mesmerizing spectacle of their flight, and the unique sounds of the air rushing past their wings.
