Witnessing a "superpod" of Pacific White-sided Dolphins was a sight unlike anything I've encountered before. The group was an estimated 300 individuals strong, and extremely active. Like other cetaceans, Pacific White-sided Dolphins are known to exhibit complex social interactions and other behaviors. In addition to socialization and feeding, the acrobatic abilities of these amazing animals were on full display, with dozens of dolphins leaping completely clear of the surface. It was a breathtaking spectacle! From a photographic perspective, capturing these dolphins mid-air was tricky. Compared to whale breaches, dolphin breaches are lighting-fast, and much more random. However, with patience and time spent observing their behavior, I was able to take on the challenge and come away with several successful images, including this one. The dolphins seemed to express pure joy, and that is certainly what I was feeling as I photographed them!
