Grizzly Bears on the British Columbia coast are closely tied to salmon. In late Summer and early Fall, the bears make their way to the streams where salmon have been returning to spawn for generations. In years where salmon are plentiful, the bears can afford to be picky, favouring the fattiest parts of the salmon: the head, skin, and roe. The scraps they leave behind feed scavenging birds and other animals, and fertilize the forest. The health of the salmon run is directly related to the bears’ breeding success. Grizzly Bears usually mate in the Summer, but delay embryo implantation until hibernation in the Fall. The embryo will only implant if the bear has gained sufficient nutrients and weight going into hibernation. This can be observed very directly, as when there are few salmon around, the following year will see few cubs. A highlight of my explorations of the British Columbia coast has been witnessing magnificent Grizzly Bears fishing for salmon. They must utilize a great deal of patience as they wade through the streams in wait of their favoured prey.
