Early spring is prime time for Anna’s Hummingbird activity in my home city of Vancouver; males are singing, displaying and defending territories non-stop, and females are hard at work building nests and providing for young. Lots of hummingbirds have a favourite perch, which they will consistently return to. This perch is often high up, at the tips of trees and shrubs. However, every now and then, you find a perch that is down low, closer to eye-level. That was the case with this male hummingbird, who returned to the exact same spot to sing and rest between feeding and displaying runs. Here, he stretched his wings and tail and flashed his stunning gorget before taking off to continue his displays.
