I've long wanted to photograph an owl in front of the moon, and while I've had some limited success in the past, this opportunity was the best chance that I've ever had. Northern Hawk Owls often spend a lot of time in the same locations, frequently perching in the open at the tops of trees. This behavior makes them the perfect subject to attempt to align with the moon. However, a lot of things still need to go well- you need a bird perched in the right position, the moon in the right direction, and clear skies. On a beautiful winter evening, all of it finally came together. With the moon low on the horizon, it was possible to keep the bird small in frame relative to the moon. Utilizing a small aperture of f/18, it was possible to get a little bit of detail in both the bird and the moon in a single exposure.
