The sight of a 65,000 pound Humpback Whale leaping out of the water is nothing short of breathtaking. However, when this individual known as "Mathematician" breached 15 times in a row, it was on another level. Historically, Humpback Whales were common on the British Columbia, Canada, coast. Commercial hunting from the late 1800s until around 1965 severely depleted their populations, making them a rare sight in most parts of the world. However, over the last 15 years, Humpback Whales have once again become increasingly more abundant in British Columbia waters. In the early 2000s, it was difficult to see a Humpback Whale in Salish Sea, where I captured this image. Now, they can be seen in large numbers on their migration each year.
