On April 8 2024, a total solar eclipse swept across a narrow path of totality from Mexico, to Newfoundland, Canada. I positioned myself in a small boat next to some rocky islets just off the coast of Mazatlán, with the goal of fulfilling a dream I’d had for several years: photographing a bird in front of a solar eclipse. A year and a half of planning and preparation paid off, and I was rewarded with a spectacular view of the eclipse as Magnificent Frigatebirds flew past, apparently confused by the increasing darkness and heading to their roost. Thanks to some thin clouds softening the light and a strong filter on my lens to darken the bright sun, I was able to capture this image when a frigatebird flew past the eclipse, with just a small crescent of the sun exposed behind the moon.
