Seeing a day of torrential rain in the weather forecast, I headed out to a local wildlife refuge near my home city of Vancouver, with the goal of photographing ducks in the rain. I had been photographing closeup details in the feathers of ducks for quite some time, but was looking forward to the opportunity to capture the birds with water droplets on their body. I was thrilled when I saw a male Wood Duck sitting up on a fence (a spot I'd seen Wood Ducks several times before), overlooking a large slough. I took advantage of the opportunity, approaching slowly and focusing on the droplet-covered back of the duck with an aperture of f/14, to expand the depth of field a bit. This was the result! When people think of places with beautiful, brightly coloured birds, they tend to think of the tropics. However, spectacular birds can be found just about anywhere, including here in Canada.
