A Bald Eagle comes in for a landing, just metres in front of where I was positioned. To have such a magnificent bird with a 6-7 foot wingspan land so close was an incredible experience! I could hear and feel the wind coming off of those massive wings.
This was photographed in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, where thousands of Bald Eagles gather each year to feast on spawning salmon. The eagles don’t typically eat living salmon; they wait for them to finish spawning, and scavenge on the carcasses that wash up along the river. They will carry some of the fish into the trees, where salmon remains are dropped into the forest and fertilize the plants with important marine nutrients.
