The Greater Roadrunner has long been one of my favourite birds. I find them to be highly charismatic, giving off a lot of expression in photographs. While driving through a residential area with my parents near Palm Springs, California, I spotted this roadrunner making its way in the grassy margin along the side of the road. Pulling over, I lay down in the grass, waiting. Eventually, the roadrunner approached to just feet away. Unfortunately, the mid-day light was harsh. However, I anticipated that the bird would move in and out of shadows cast by various artificial structures in the area, such as fences and vehicles. As I had hoped, the roadrunner paused in a perfect spot, with sunlight touching just its eye and crown, and I captured this intimate portrait.
