As a professional photographer and wildlife guide, I've been fortunate to witness some amazing natural phenomena, and have gotten to share many memorable moments with wildlife lovers from around the world. However, I've found that few animals can bring out emotion in us humans like Humpback Whales do. So far, there is one animal in particular I've seen repeatedly move people to tears, and that's the Humpback Whale. During the summer of 2023, I was fortunate to spend time with Humpback Whales more or less every day while guiding my Bald Eagle and Coastal Wildlife photography workshops near Vancouver Island. One evening, we witnessed a double breach; immediately after one Humpback leaped out of the water, a second individual joined in! I captured this moment as the Humpback soared through the air in front of the sunset-illuminated splash of the first breaching whale.
